Loss of Elasticity
Loss of skin elasticity, known as elastosis, is a natural part of aging where the skin gradually loses its ability to stretch and snap back into place. This process is primarily due to the degradation of elastin and collagen, proteins that provide structural support and flexibility to the skin. Contributing factors include prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, smoking, poor nutrition, and environmental pollutants, all of which can accelerate the breakdown of these proteins.
As elasticity diminishes, the skin becomes more prone to sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines, especially in areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, and hands. While the aging process cannot be completely halted, measures such as using sunscreen, maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding smoking and doing treatments that promote collagen production can help slow the loss of skin elasticity and maintain a more youthful appearance.
